It’s a weekend of world-class performance art! Respected local and national artists will perform original, unrehearsed art pieces throughout Sugar House Monument Plaza (1078 E 2100 S) on Friday, May 8th from 4-9pm (coinciding with Sugar House Art Walk), and Saturday, May 9th from 11am-4pm. The 12th Annual Performance Art Festival is suitable for all ages.

What is Performance Art?

Performance art is a visual art form wherein the artist is the art and the artist does real things in real time and real space. Works are not scripted or rehearsed, but come out of a concept, intent or idea, and are done for the first time when they are performed. Audience and artist share an experience in this art form therefore, audience and artist are of equal importance in performance art. Some performances are short and some are of long duration, some involve big groups of people and some involve only one audience member at a time, some are audience interactive and some art not. Sometimes the artist speaks and at other times the artist is silent. Performance art carries a wide range of concepts, and however a witness interprets the art is correct – there is not a single, right answer, so in this respect, it is much like abstract painting or sculpture. -Kristina Lenzi, Festival Curator

Her work spans ink painting, installation, artist’s books, handscrolls, and screens, often drawing on symbols of women from religious, literary, and mythological traditions. Through her practice, she reinterprets ink painting to explore gender, feminine thought, and her experiences of womanhood and motherhood.

Molly Heller is an Associate Professor at the University of Utah’s School of Dance and a recipient of the College of Fine Arts Faculty Excellence Award in Research (2024–2025). Her work explores performance as a healing practice and the relationship between physical expression and emotion.
